Maersk has signed an settlement to put in a high-tech “rotor sail” on one among its container vessels, marking the corporate’s first foray into wind-assisted propulsion for its ocean fleet.

The 115-foot-tall sail, designed by London-based Anemoi Marine Applied sciences, can be retrofitted to a 984-foot, 8,700-TEU Lima-class ship and piloted throughout common industrial service, with set up due in mid-2027.

The vessel is predicted to function on Maersk (OTC: AMKBY) north and south Atlantic voyages whereas the sail is piloted. The system can be examined in industrial service after that.

Anemoi sometimes installs three to 5 rotor sails per vessel, with every unit saving roughly one ton of gas per day and round three tons of CO₂ emissions, in line with the corporate’s specs.

}, 30000);
});

googletag.cmd.push(perform() { googletag.show(‘div-gpt-ad-1709668545404-0’); });

Maersk says the rotor sail is a part of a broader, fuel-agnostic strategy to slicing greenhouse fuel emissions throughout its ocean enterprise. The corporate’s present priorities middle on scaling lower-GHG-emission fuels resembling bio- and e-methanol, increasing its dual-fuel fleet, and enhancing community and vessel effectivity.

Earlier this 12 months, CMA CGM started rotations of the sail-assisted Neoliner Origin, a ro-ro vessel calling the Port of Baltimore.

In 2025, Maersk added 10 dual-fuel methanol vessels and accomplished fuel-saving retrofits on 230 owned ships and 150 time-chartered vessels, serving to push its ocean Vitality Effectivity Operational Indicator (EEOI) to a report low of 10.8 gCO₂e per ton-nautical mile. By 2027, the corporate expects 25 dual-fuel ships in service, finally reaching 25% of its fleet able to operating on lower-emission fuels.

The corporate has focused net-zero emissions by 2040.
