Union Pacific Chief Govt Jim Vena stated he’s “99.99%” assured regulators will approve the railroad’s proposed $85 billion acquisition of Norfolk Southern, arguing that the mix would velocity freight deliveries and strengthen rail’s competitors with trucking.

Talking with Fox Enterprise Information Oct. 6, Vena defended the proposed merger towards opposition from some labor unions, agricultural teams and competing railroads.

Requested how sure he was of approval, Vena acknowledged a small measure of uncertainty: “You at all times must have a bit of little bit of doubt, however I’m 99.99%.”

The transaction stays topic to approval by the Floor Transportation Board.

“We all know that the method by means of the STB, regardless that it’s … loopy lengthy, they’ll get to the correct resolution,” Vena stated. “And the correct resolution is, it’s important to do what’s higher for the nation and extra alternative to maneuver forward and never look backwards.”

Vena stated becoming a member of the Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP) and Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC) networks may save prospects 24 to 48 hours by eliminating interchange delays on freight shifting between the western and japanese United States. The railroads contend that the mix would enable them to compete extra successfully with trucking by means of decrease costs and larger effectivity.

The mixed railroad would embody roughly 50,000 miles of monitor, and opponents of the consolidation contend it could give the companions near-monopoly powers in rail transportation. Vena argued that opponents’ opposition mirrored concern concerning the stronger service providing the merged firm may deliver to the market.

“Within the enterprise world, in the event that they thought we had been doing one thing illogical and it made no sense, they might simply keep quiet … and allow us to fail, however we’re not failing,” he stated. “That’s what they’re anxious about. We’re gonna have a greater product, cheaper price, extra functionality to maneuver and win within the market.”

In an August letter to the Trump administration, the Cease the Rail Merger Coalition of shippers stated the mix would place practically half of the nation’s rail visitors below one firm’s management. The coalition warned of hurt to farmers, producers, vitality producers and railroad staff, together with increased client prices and dangers to provide chains.

President Donald Trump had initially expressed help for the transaction. A last STB resolution is predicted in 2027.
